London Electric Car Charge Scheme Hots up

Posted 26 May, 2011

Today London has taken a large step towards becoming 'electric car capital of Europe' with the addition of a further 150 charge points added across the English capital city. This will bring the total charge points to 400, with the intent of eventually being around 1,300 by 2013. The idea behind the scheme is to help improve fears of range problems, due to typical electric cars needing a recharge every 100 miles. If the target figure is reached by 2013, this will provide one charge point within a mile of another across the city.

Under the scheme, members pay an annual fee of £100, allowing them unlimited access to charge points across London, with the possibility of a future prospect of combining with other schemes across the country.

London City Mayor, Boris Johnson is a keen supporter of the electric car, he suggested that he "wants to see a rapid uptake of electric cars". also pointing out "that one of the major issues to using electric car is the accessibility of nearby charge points, which will see a big increase within the next few years."

2011 has already been suggested as a breakthrough year for electric cars, as Vauxhall, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Renault and Toyota are all set to release an electric vehicle.
